Active Doesn't Mean Effective
A widget can rack up thousands of impressions and add nothing to your revenue. Without checking the right numbers regularly, you'd never know. These are the three metrics worth watching.
The Three Metrics That Matter
For every upsell or cross-sell rule, focus on:
- Views — how many times the widget was shown to a customer
- Clicks — how many customers interacted with a recommended product
- Revenue — the value added to orders through that specific rule
Click-through rate (clicks ÷ views) tells you whether the product pairing feels relevant. Revenue tells you whether those clicks are actually converting into purchases. A high CTR with low revenue usually points to an issue with the recommended product itself — its price, description, or images — not with the rule.
What SmartSellio's Dashboard Shows You
SmartSellio's revenue dashboard gives you a central view of performance across all active rules:
- Total and monthly upsell revenue trends
- Views and clicks per individual rule
- At-a-glance identification of top performers and underperformers
This makes it straightforward to decide what to keep, what to edit, and what to disable. You don't need to export data or cross-reference Shopify reports — everything you need is in one place.
How to Read the Numbers Correctly
Compare rules that have been live for a similar length of time. A rule with 500 views and 0 clicks after two weeks has a clear problem — the pairing is probably irrelevant, the widget is positioned below the fold, or the recommended product is out of stock. A rule with 200 views and 15 clicks is performing well even if absolute revenue is still modest.
Look for patterns across multiple rules rather than reacting to individual data points. If all your cart-page rules underperform while product-page rules convert well, that's a signal about your store's traffic behaviour, not a reason to rewrite every rule.
A Simple Review Cadence
During your first month, check the dashboard weekly. After that, a monthly review is sufficient unless you're running active promotions or making significant catalogue changes. Consistency matters more than frequency — regular reviews catch problems early and surface opportunities before you miss them.
From Data to Action
Once you have a few weeks of data, start making small changes. One variable at a time: swap the sort order on a low-performing rule from 'best selling' to 'random' and check whether clicks pick up. Move a product-page rule to the cart position and see if conversion improves. These aren't big changes, but they add up.
